M-CHS students win at Scholastic Art & Writing

$PHOTOCREDIT_ON$M-CHS students Stephen Garner and Sara Lewis were recognized for their outstanding work in the Colorado Regional Scholastic Art & Writing Awards competition. Stephen Garner received a Silver Key for his watercolor titled “Awakenings,” and Sara Lewis earned an Honorable Mention for her mixed media work “Over the Shoulder Boulder Holder.” Their work will be featured in an art show celebrating Youth Art Month at the Cortez Cultural Center from March 6-16, with an opening event from 5:30 to 7 p.m. on Thursday, March 8.$PHOTOCREDIT_OFF$

Wyatt Wallace of Dolores tries to break free from Paonia’s Kyler Bear during the 160-pound Class 2A Regional Championships in Grand Junction Saturday. Wallace lost the match but finished second. A total of four Dolores wrestlers advanced to state, which concludes on Saturday.

Lexy Lee Ann Hoffman, along with her parents, Dustin and Katie Hoffman, of Big Piney, Wyo. would like to announce the birth of Stetson Steven Hoffman, born Nov. 18, 2011. He was born in Ogden, Utah at Ogden Regional Medical Center weighing 7 pounds, 2 ounces, and was 19 inches long at birth. Also welcoming Stetson are grandparents Steven and Susan Hoffman of Big Piney, Clyde Willis of Anchorage, Alaska, and Brad and Tamara Sturman and son Tyrell of Cortez. His proud great-grandparents are Chester and Joan Tozer, Donna Bowling, and Dixie Sturman, all of Cortez.

Trevyn was born Dec. 2, 2011 at 8:38 p.m. at Mercy Regional Medical Center in Durango. He weighed 8 pounds and was 21 inches long at birth. Trevyn is the son of Jori and Travis White of Mancos. His grandparents are Don and Deana Yeomans of Mancos, and Sherri and Tracy White of La Junta, Colo. Great-grandparents are Dixie Robbins, Jane Yeomans and Betty Dillon of Mancos, Jim and Ruth White of La Junta, and Dale and Janet Buck of Wichita, Kan.

Students reaching for their dream

With the help of schoolmates, Montezuma-Cortez High School freshman Waynoka Whiteskunk creates a dreamcatcher during a team building activity during the Native American Regional High School Gathering that brought 250 Native American high school students to the Fort Lewis College campus. The gathering was provided by the Colorado Pathways Graduation Grant and included speakers and activities geared toward encouraging students to graduate.
