500 attend benefit for Vickie Wallace

Event latest held to help members of community

Desserts, art, knit goods and people lined the walls at the benefit for Vicki Wallace, who is battling metastatic colon cancer.

About 500 people attended the event at the Lewis-Arriola Community Center on Saturday evening.

The turnout didn't surprise any of Wallace's friends, especially Heather Pierce, who described her as a "hardworking, dynamic, cowgirl."

The Wallace family has ranched in the area for six generations.

This benefit is the latest in a series for community members in need.

Lenetta Shull, one of the organizers, noted the hardworking and fighting spirit of the community when she thanked the crowd.

"We give from our heart," she said.

Pies, cookies and desserts of all kinds auctioned at well over $100 each.

Chicken bingo and silent-auction items ranging from kitchen faucets to handmade pots also filled the room.

"It's more of a testimony, not about me, but about our community," Wallace said.
