Youth wrestlers excel in tournament

Cortez club travels to Farmington

Three youths from the Cortez Wrestling Club performed well at the Aztec National Championship April 22 at the McGee Park Colosseum in Farmington.

De’Tarius Mills took second place in the 6-and-under heavyweight division; Owen Balfour took third in the 8-and-under heavyweight division; and Joey Antonio took fourth in the 6-and-under heavyweight division.

The competition was good, said parent Kylie White, especially because the kids went up against wrestlers they had never competed against before.

“My son De’Tarius was jumping up and down when a trophy was presented to him,” White said. “On the way home, he was all smiles and buckled the trophy in the seatbelt!”

The kids, coached by Eddie Abeyta, practice every week, and compete in local tournaments frequently.
