A 41-year-old Durango woman was arrested on suspicion of attempted murder, domestic violence and second-degree assault after an incident last week at a local motel.
According to an arrest affidavit, authorities were called to the Animas Country Inn at 3310 Main Ave. around 9:30 p.m. Thursday for a report of a woman who assaulted a man.
On scene, the 42-year-old man told authorities he was assaulted by Keesha Marie McCoy, who he said was his girlfriend.
The man told Durango police he and McCoy had argued earlier in the day, and then McCoy assaulted him and strangled him.
“(The victim) told (the investigating officer) several times that while he was being strangled by (McCoy), (the victim) thought he was going to die,” the arrest affidavit says.
The Durango Central Communications Center found an active protection order that says McCoy is a restrained party and the man is the protected party, according to court documents. The order stems from a previous domestic violence incident and says McCoy cannot assault or harass the man or consume alcohol or drugs.
The man had several injuries on his face, bruising around his eyes and nose, and blood on his lower lip, the investigating officer wrote. Officers also noted red marks around his neck, consistent with strangulation.
McCoy, seated on a sidewalk, was informed she was under arrest but refused to stand up. She was then helped up and placed in handcuffs. She was resistant as police walked her to a patrol car, according to court records.
“(McCoy) became highly uncooperative and would not get herself inside the back seat of my patrol vehicle,” the officer wrote.
An officer who was trying to help get McCoy inside the vehicle was kicked “multiple times in his thighs.” Police then applied a leg hobble to McCoy to prevent her from hurting herself and officers, court documents show.
At the La Plata County Jail, McCoy again became combative. She was taken to a holding cell without further incident, the arrest affidavit says.
McCoy was charged on suspicion of attempted murder, domestic violence, second-degree assault, violation of a protection order and resisting arrest. Court records do not say where McCoy lives.
McCoy has a court hearing scheduled for Aug. 6.
