‘Will be in each others’ lives forever’

I was pleased to read the news story acknowledging the success of Big Brother Big Sisters of Southwest Colorado in our community for 40 years.

I grew up in Cincinnati in the 1960s with a single mom and an older brother. Even the dog was female. My brother needed male role models, and had amazing and impactful experiences with several Big Brothers over the years.

Inspired by that positive experience, I have been involved with Big Brothers Big Sisters of Southwest Colorado for close to 20 years. I’ve had several “Littles” in different programs and served on the board almost six years. I absolutely adore my current Little.

Our relationship/friendship started as she began third grade and she will finish her freshman year at Durango High School in a few weeks. We just have fun and, genuinely, have grown to really like each other. We play games and giggle like school kids. We enjoy baking, well mostly decorating, and eating and sharing our creations.

I have watched her grow into a remarkable young lady and am so pleased she still makes it a priority to hang out with me. Although she will age out of the program at 18, I know we will be in each others’ lives forever. It has been such a rewarding experience for both of us.

I encourage others to enroll as a “Big.” You really will make a difference.
