Wildfire starts in HD Mountains, southeast of Bayfield

Fire investigators say blaze is human-caused
A 10-acre fire has started in the HD Mountains, which fire investigators believe was human-caused.

Air tankers, helicopters and ground crews responded Tuesday to a wildfire in the southern HD Mountains, southeast of Bayfield.

The Durango Interagency Fire Dispatch Center posted to social media the “1007 Fire” is believed to be human-caused. It had grown to about 10 acres as of late Tuesday.

A spokesman with the U.S. Forest Service did not immediately have information as of Wednesday morning.

The dispatch center said the fire is on the south side of Spring Creek, along the Pine-Piedra Stock Driveway, a historic trail in Archuleta County.

“Please be extra careful when you are out and about,” the dispatch center posted. “Make sure that all campfires are dead out before you leave them, even if it will only be for a short amount of time. Be mindful of cigarettes, pick up cigarette butts. Don’t park an ATV or vehicle in the dried grass. Make sure your tow chains are well secured and not dragging.”
