Mancos, Dove Creek football pick up emphatic wins
FOOTBALL

Oct. 12: Mancos 50, Vail Christian 6

Mancos (5-1, 2-0 Mountain League) extended their winning streak to five while continuing the Mountain League’s recent dominance over the Northwest League with a comprehensive 50-6 win against the Saints (4-2, 2-1 Northwest League) in Edwards. The Jays have one more road contest remaining in their regular season schedule – next Friday at 6 p.m. against Sanford – while they close in on a second straight league title.

Oct. 11: Dove Creek 50, Norwood 26

The Bulldogs (5-1, 1-1 Mountain League) blew open a 22-18 halftime score with a dominant performance in the second stanza over the visiting Mavericks (2-4, 0-2 Mountain League). Juniors Josh Kibel and Nicholas Aragon both ran for over 150 yards while accounting for four rushing scores as the ‘Dogs earned their third straight win over their rivals. Dove Creek preps for their Homecoming duel with Dolores (2-4, 0-2 Mountain League) on Friday at 6 p.m., a game that can be heard on local radio station KRTZ 98.7 FM and krtzradio.com.

VOLLEYBALL

Oct. 11: Centauri 3, M-CHS 0

The Panthers closed out their regular season with home matches against IML opposition, with M-CHS dropping their last action of the season to finish out 7-16. A young Panther squad under first-year head coach Danielle Waltman look to continue their improvements, having more than doubled their 2023 win total.

Oct. 10: Norwood 3, Dolores 1

Oct. 11: Dolores 3, Ouray 0

The Bears split action over the weekend to improve their record to 6-11 while also staying right in the middle of the field in the San Juan Basin League. Dolores has won their last two home matches, but will finish with four of their final five matches on the road. Dolores heads to Dove Creek on Friday, Oct. 18 to begin that road span before Senior Day on Oct. 22 at home against Ridgway.

Oct. 12: Dove Creek 3, Monte Vista 0

The run extended to 14 straight matches to the good for first-year head coach Erin Barry, as Dove Creek enters the home stretch of their SJBL title pursuit. Their home finale against Dolores on the 18th will help recognize their strong senior class, while the Bulldog domination leaves them poised to host a regional site in the 1A postseason in early November.

Oct. 11: Bayfield 5, M-CHS 0

The Panthers (2-9-1, 0-3-1 3A IML) suffered a defeat on their Senior Day celebrations, with the Wolverines scoring four times in the first half to settle matters. M-CHS still has a busy road ahead, with road matches at Caprock Academy (Oct. 19) and another meeting with Bayfield (Oct. 24) waiting in the wings for the Panthers.
