Weekend Roundup: Mancos enjoys Homecoming week volleyball wins

Dolores boys cross-country takes second in Pagosa Springs

The Dolores boys posted five runners in the top 30 of the McGinn Memorial Cross-country Challenge, led by junior Aaron Nielson in fifth overall. The Bears claimed second in the team competition on Saturday, while in the girls race, senior Elia Lowe posted a ninth-place finish to guide the girls to a fifth-place team finish.

In the same meet, the M-CHS girls posted their first team finish of the season, taking ninth-place while senior Sophie Wright led the way in 47th individually, while the boys took tenth as a team behind senior Corbin Myers finishing 32nd overall.

The Mancos XC squad raced in Delta at Pantherfest, with senior Teagan Archer leading the girls with a 65th place finish, while freshman Cuinn Archer led the boys with a 59th place run.

Oct. 3: Mancos 3, Dolores 0

Oct. 5: Mancos 3, Telluride 1

The Bluejays (13-4, 7-1 SJBL) cruised to a pair of league victories this week, completing their season sweep of the Bears before edging past the Miners in their first of two meetings this year. Mancos hosts Ignacio on Oct. 10 for a pivotal match in the battle for second place in the San Juan Basin League, while Dolores travels to Norwood on the same night to meet the Mavericks.

Oct. 4: Dove Creek 3, Center 0

The Bulldogs (13-1, 6-0 SJBL) briefly stepped outside of league play to dispatch the Vikings, extending their winning run to 10 straight matches. A meeting with Monticello on Oct. 8 before hosting Norwood on Oct. 11, as the Bulldogs close in on a San Juan Basin League title.

Oct. 1: Pagosa Springs 3, M-CHS 2

The Panthers (7-13 1-4 3A IML) opened their four-match league homestand with a back and forth five-setter against the Pirates. M-CHS tallied an opening set win, then jumped out in front 2-1 thanks to a 25-19 third set. However, Pagosa Springs took the final two sets to escape with the victory. Homecoming week will include three home matches for the Panthers, with Bayfield in town on Tuesday, followed by Centauri on Friday and Alamosa on Saturday.

Oct. 4: Pagosa Springs 2, M-CHS 0

After holding the Pirates scoreless through the opening hour of the contest, M-CHS couldn’t preserve the shutout as they fell on their home field in the second match of their three match homestand. The Panthers fall to 2-8-1 and 0-2-1 in Intermountain League play with one more match remaining on their home pitch. M-CHS hosts Bayfield for Senior Day on Friday, Oct. 11 at 4 p.m.
