FootballBayfield 47, M-CHS 0The Montezuma-Cortez Panthers were blanked 47-0 by the Bayfield Wolverines on Friday.

The Wolverines defense held the Panthers to just 7 yards rushing and 133 yards passing in the their homecoming win.

Stepping in at quarterback, Coby Baer was 7 for 10 for 112 yards, and Zeke Vargas had 3 catches for 74 yards.

Defensively, Juan Arballo had an interception and Tanner Desrosiers and Elisha Vaquera led the Panthers with 7 tackles each.

M-CHS (1-5, 0-2 Intermountain League) returns home on Saturday to host the Delta Panthers (4-2, 2-0 IML) at 1 p.m.

Ignacio 49, Dolores 6Southern Peaks League play hasn’t been friendly to the Dolores Bears.

After falling to John Mall 19-0 the week prior, Dolores lost on the road to Ignacio on Friday.

Ignacio led 7-0 after the first quarter, before Junior QB Justin Purkat ran in a 9-yard TD in the second to bring Dolores within one point, trailing 7-6. But then the Bobcats scored 42 unanswered points to run away with a 49-6 win.

The Bears (3-3, 0-2 SPL) will attempt to get their first league win on Friday against the Center Vikings (4-2, 2-0 SPL)

Norwood 44, Mancos 8The Mancos Blue Jays fell in their biggest test of the year (so far) to the Norwood Mavericks on Friday.

Taking on the No. 5 ranked team in the state on the road, Mancos lost 44-8 to move to 4-3 on the season and 3-1 in A-8 Southwest League play.

They’ve now got a week to regroup before hosting Dove Creek (1-5, 1-2 A-8 SWL) on Friday, Oct. 21.

Sargent 1, Dove Creek 0 (Forfeit)With a limited number of players due to injuries and ineligibility, the Dove Creek Bulldogs forfeited their game against Sargent (6-0, 3-0 A-8 SWL) on Friday.

Head coach Shane Baughman said that he anticipates the Bulldogs will return to action next Friday at home against Sanford (1-5, 1-2 A-8 SWL).

VolleyballM-CHS falls to Montrose, downs OlatheWith Montrose senior Allie Freeburg racking up 25 kills in Cortez on Friday, the M-CHS Lady Panthers fell to the visiting Indians in four sets: 19-25, 6-25, 31-29, 4-25.

However, they bounced back on Saturday in a road contest, sweeping Olathe 25-21, 25-17, 25-16.

M-CHS (6-11, 2-4 IML) continues league play at home on Tuesday against No. 7 Bayfield Wolverines (10-3, 5-0 IML).

Bears sweep OurayAfter sweeping Mancos on Thursday (25-15, 25-18, 25-9), the Dolores Lady Bears dispatched the Ouray Trojans in a home contest on Friday.

Tatum Majors led the Bears with 8 kills and 10 digs and Abby Jones dealt 12 assists in the 3-0 win over Ouray (25-16, 25-10, 25-15).

Dolores (5-9, 4-5 San Juan Basin League) next hosts Dove Creek (6-6, 2-6 SJBL) on Wednesday.

Mancos loses at NorwoodAfter falling at home to Dolores on Thursday, the Mancos Lady Blue Jays were swept in Norwood on Friday.

The Mavericks took down the Jays in three straight sets, 25-15, 25-20, 25-15.

Mancos (2-13, 1-9 SJBL) plays at Dove Creek (6-6, 2-6 SJBL) on Tuesday.

Dove Creek drops twoThe Dove Creek Lady Bulldogs dropped contests to Telluride and Ridgway over the weekend.

The Bulldogs snatched a game from Telluride on Friday, but fell 3-1 (25-14, 23-25, 25-13, 25-23). And then on Saturday they were swept in an away match with Ridgway (25-12, 25-18, 25-8).

They will next host Mancos on Tuesday and then play at Dolores on Wednesday.

SoftballLady Panthers’ season comes to a closeThe Montezuma-Cortez softball season wrapped up with doubleheaders at Cedaredge and Gunnison over the weekend.

The Lady Panthers were first swept by the No. 10 ranked Bruins 17-7 and 16-0, before splitting games with Gunnison.

Freshman Alexis Cornett hit a triple and a home run in the Lady Panthers’ 18-11 opening win over Gunnison, but the Cowboys came back to win game two 11-10 and end the Lady Panthers’ season with a loss.

SoccerM-CHS comes up just shortThe Montezuma-Cortez soccer team came up one goal short against Alamosa on Friday in its final home game of the season.

Juan Para knocked in two first-half goals for M-CHS, but Alamosa led 4-2 at the break.

Freshman Alden Adams added the only second half goal of the contest to bring M-CHS within one at 4-3, but the score remained as time expired.

M-CHS (1-10, 0-9 IML) plays at Ridgway (6-3, 6-3 IML) on Friday and at Telluride (6-5-1, 5-4-1 IML) on Saturday.

Cross-CountryJosh Ramos and Caisey Duran win at home meetMontezuma-Cortez senior Josh Ramos and junior Caisey Duran won their respective races at the Ancient Trails Cross-Country Invitational on Saturday at the Montezuma County Fairgrounds.

Ramos won the boys varsity race in 18 minutes and 26 seconds. Other area top-ten finishers were Mancos sophomore Teslin Stecher (18:48.30) in second place, Mancos junior Jake McKie (18:57.65) finished fifth, and M-CHS junior Reid Littlefield (18:59.43) took sixth.

In just her fifth career cross-country race, Duran won the girls varsity event in 22 minutes and 58 seconds. Other top-ten finishing area girls were M-CHS senior Sam Bagge (23:42.51), who ran a season-best time to finish in fifth, and Mancos senior Emma Most (24:20.88), who placed eighth.
