Weather advisory: Up to 14 inches of snow in the mountains

The National Weather Service has issued a winter weather advisory for Southwest Colorado from 9 p.m. Monday to 6 p.m. Tuesday.

Five to 10 inches of snow, with up to 14 inches in isolated areas, is expected above 9,000 feet in elevation, causing difficult travel on Tuesday morning. The weather advisory includes the southwest and northwest San Juan Mountains, and the West Elk and Sawatch mountains, including Lizard Head, Red Mountain, Coal Bank, Molas and Monarch passes.

Winds are expected to reach 25 mph in the mountains, causing drifting snow. Be prepared for snow-covered roads and limited visibility while driving.

In Montezuma and La Plata counties, the daytime high temperature on Monday is expected to reach 60 degrees, with a 60-70 percent chance of precipitation on Monday night and a low of 39. On Tuesday, there’s a 60-70 percent chance of precipitation before noon, with a daytime high of 50 degrees and an overnight low of 34. Sunny skies are expected Wednesday through Friday, with daytime highs near 60 degrees.
