No doubt, the Dolores Bears volleyball team would have preferred to finish its regular season on a more positive note.
Playing a road matchup against the Ridgway Demons on Friday, Oct. 18, the Bears started strong before falling apart, eventually losing in four sets, 21-25, 28-26, 25-23, 25-17.
"They hit the ball better than we did," said Bears' head coach Gina Hollen of Ridgway. "Their energy was a little bit higher. We got frustrated with each other, and we shut down on our communication."
Leading the way for the Bulldogs was sophomore Courtney Blackmer, who recorded 14 kills, six blocks and 18 digs. Junior Elana Berholtz added three aces and sophomore Larissa Umberger had 31 assists.
"(Blackmer) was pretty aggressive at the net for us," Hollen said. "Her hitting is not quite as consistent as I want it to be, but she's definitely the most consistent hitter on the team."
With the loss, Dolores wrapped up their regular season with a 13-6 record.
Next up for the Bears will be the 2A District 3 tournament, which will take place in Mancos on Saturday, Oct. 26.
Dolores will open the tournament against Ignacio before squaring off against the Nucla Mustangs to conclude pool play.
"We know that Nucla is a tough team," said Hollen. "They took us to five last time. We're going to make some adjustments."
If the Bears defeat Ignacio and Nucla in pool play, they will move on to the elimination portion of the tournament.
