Umberger sets impressive example

Sophomore plays three varsity sports, maintains solid GPA

Nearing the conclusion of her sophomore year at Dolores High School, Larissa Umberger's list of accomplishments already reads like that of a senior.

A three-sport varsity athlete, Umberger has been spectacular on the court, in the gym and on the track.

Umberger has also performed well in class and positively influenced those around her with an infectious personality.

Varsity volleyball player

After playing limited points during her freshman season, Umberger played a key role for Bears volleyball team last season.

A skilled setter, Umberger led the team with 456 assists on the season. She also ranked second on the team in aces with 18 and recorded 164 digs on the year.

"Volleyball was really fun, and it was a really good group of girls," Umberger said. "Individually, I had a really good season and enjoyed lots of play time."

Already looking ahead to next season, she Umberger plans to attend a three-day position specific camp at Colorado Mesa University this summer.

"We're going to have a lot of incoming freshman who are very talented," she said. "I hope we can make it as far as we can."

Solid basketball player

Rapidly improving as a point guard over the course of the 2013-14 season, Umberger demonstrated that her athletic abilities translate well to the hardwood.

In addition to scoring 5.6 points per game, Umberger was a force on the defensive end, registering 1.4 steals per game. She also led the Bears in assists.

"It was a big jump for me from last year to this year," Umberger said. "I got way more play time, and I felt like our team improved a lot during the season.

Speedy track athlete

Wrapping up her busy athletic schedule this spring season, Umberger has been consistently solid for the Dolores High School track team as a hurdler and sprinter.

Hoping to qualify for state this season, Umberger is ranked 18th in the state in the 100-meter hurdles with a time of 17.76 seconds.

"Track is going well," said Umberger. "I've had lots of success in the hurdles, which has been cool."

Impressive student

More than just an athlete, Umberger has managed to maintain a 4.0 grade point average during her first two years of high school.

Listing math and biology as her favorite subjects, she said she hasn't decided on a career path, but plans to attend college.

She's also open to collegiate athletics.

"I'm kind of hoping to play volleyball if it works out, but I'm not going to choose the school for the sport," Umberger said.

As for the advice that she'd offer to young people hoping to follow in her footsteps, Umberger was honest:

"Get involved with a lot of things and work hard."

Certainly wise words from Umberger, who, due to her athletic accomplishments and academic acumen, has solidified herself as one Dolores' rising stars.
