U.S. Highway 550 south of Durango was closed for about three hours Wednesday during the busiest part of the morning commute when drivers are traveling between New Mexico and Colorado.
Two semi-tractor trailers spun out, with one in a ditch and the other jackknifed in the road near mile marker 7, which is about 10 miles south of Durango, said Trooper Doug Wiersma, spokesman with the Colorado State Patrol.
The highway was closed from 5:57 to 9:02 p.m. while a wrecker crew from Aztec worked to remove the trucks, Wiersma said.
“That was like three hours, so I can imagine there were some pretty upset people,” he said.
There were no injuries, he said.
Traffic was diverted to La Posta Road (County Road 213) near mile marker 3.5 on Highway 550, according to the Colorado Department of Transportation. Maintenance crews with CDOT assisted with the road closure and traffic control.
Roads were icy throughout the region as a result of light snowfall overnight.
