Two suspects taken into custody at gunpoint in northeast Durango

Officers found stolen SUV in church parking lot
Durango Police Department officers arrest the driver of a stolen vehicle Tuesday at the intersection of Aspen Drive and Florida Road.

Two suspects were taken into custody at gunpoint Tuesday afternoon after police spotted a stolen vehicle in northeast Durango.

Durango Police Department Cmdr. Ray Shupe said officers had been looking for the stolen SUV for the past couple of days. An officer Tuesday spotted the vehicle in a church parking lot near Florida Road and Aspen Drive.

Because stealing a vehicle is a felony offense, officers conducted a “felony stop,” in which they took the suspects into custody at gunpoint, Shupe said.

The suspects were taken into custody, but not charged as of Tuesday afternoon. Shupe did not immediately respond for follow-up comment Wednesday.
