The trial of Trinadie Lopez, who is suspected in a Cortez street shooting in September, on Tuesday was pushed to August at the request of his new lawyer.
Lopez, 20, is suspected of firing the gun on Empire and Market streets on Sept. 15 and injuring an 18-year-old bystander. He turned himself into police in October after a warrant for his arrest was made public.
Defense lawyer Kent Pace said he was still trying to familiarize himself with the case after taking over from lawyer Richard Jaye in May.
Chief Judge Todd Plewe of the 22nd Judicial District approved Pace’s request for a continuance but said it would be the last extension.
Lopez’s next hearing is Aug. 13 at 10 a.m.
Pace was named Lopez’s new attorney in May. In the same hearing, Lopez waived his right to a speedy trial, citing the change in attorney.
His trial had been set for the end of July and beginning of August.
Lopez is being monitored by GPS, according to the court, and will be responsible for bringing his GPS report to his next hearing, per Plewe’s request.
All other people arrested in connection with the street shooting have been released. Earlier this year, the District Attorney’s Office said Lopez most likely fired the gun.
Video footage from the shooting wasn’t clear enough to identify the shooter.
