Trials reset for couple charged with animal cruelty

Jeffery and Elizabeth Jackson waive right to speedy trail
Jeffery and Elizabeth Jackson, charged with 31 counts of animal cruelty, waived their rights to a speedy trial and had their jury trial dates reset earlier this week.

Two La Plata County residents charged with more than 30 counts of animal cruelty had their jury trials reset this week.

Jeffery and Elizabeth Jackson were supposed to stand trial in November and December, respectively.

But 6th Judicial District Attorney Christian Champagne said Friday that the Jacksons waived their right to a speedy trial. Now, Jeffery Jackson has a jury trial scheduled to start Feb. 21 and Elizabeth Jackson, who also goes by the name Elizabeth Miera, has a jury trial scheduled to start April 11.

In November 2017, authorities executed a massive animal seizure on the Jacksons’ property in southwestern La Plata County after a lengthy investigation into the mistreatment of animals. The couple has pleaded not guilty to the charges.
