Tracking registered offenders

Sheriff advises residents of addition to sex offender list

Glen C. Baty is the latest name added to the local registry of sexually violent offenders, bringing the total number of sex offenders living in Montezuma County to 52.

At a community notification meeting on Wednesday, Sheriff Dennis Spruell said Baty was the county’s newest sex offender to move into the area. With two sex-related convictions, Baty is currently living at 6509 Highway 160, No. 36, in the McLaughlin Trailer Park, Spruell said.

While sex offender information is available to the public, Spruell pleaded with the four residents who attended the notification meeting not to commit acts of vigilante retaliation, harassment or intimidation, because it could lead sex offenders to go into hiding where they cannot be tracked by law enforcement.

“We don’t want (Baty) to go underground,” Spruell said.

Residents are encouraged to report any suspicious behavior to authorities, he added.

Tattooed across his upper body, Baty, aka “Red,” was convicted in 2008 for sexually assaulting a female by providing drugs and/or alcohol to the victim as part of the assault, Spruell said. He declined to release additional information related to the incident, but added that Baty has a lengthy rap sheet, with previous convictions for domestic violence, sexual assault, assault, drugs, violation of restraining order, criminal mischief, criminal trespass, harassment and driving under suspension.

Currently under parole supervision, Baty, like other convicted sexual predators, is required to register as a sex offender every quarter with local law enforcement for the rest of his life.

Previously, Spruell also warned the community that Baty had moved to the area in January 2012. He declined to comment about why a second community notification was made this week, diverting media request to a public information officer. Repeated calls to the public information officer were not returned as of press time.

The half-hour community notification meeting on Wednesday included a 15-minute educational video from the Colorado Department of Public Safety, highlighting statistical information about offenders, crimes, victims as well as safety tips.

Upon examining the Montezuma County Sheriff’s Office sex offender registry, Alden D. Yelloweagle, convicted in 2005 of abusive sexual contact, has failed to register as a sex offender with local law enforcement. Records show the 53-year-old’s last known address was 24275 County Road E.5.

Yelloweagle is the only local sexually violent predator who has failed to register with the sheriff’s office, records show.

Federal court records show Yelloweagle maintained his registration information in Colorado until May 13, 2007. He eventually turned up in Oklahoma, where he was implicated in another sex crime, court records show.
