Rep. Tipton spoke in Montrose in October. I asked Tipton if he would support a background check bill introduced in Congress that week by a Republican from New York and a Democrat from California.
Mr. Tipton said he would not support the bill. He then made some ridiculous comparison of car accidents and deaths from guns.
To compare these tragedies is inappropriate, but I’ll go there if Tipton wants to.
First of all, a license is required to drive. Research is constantly taking place resulting in cars that are safer and a reduction in the death rate. None of this is occurring with guns.
Although I’m a hunter, I support reasonable gun restrictions. To not support these measures, which could not be considered even a minor inconvenience to the vast majority of sportsmen, is the ultimate in selfish behavior.
I hope Tipton can sleep at night. I couldn’t if I knew I was doing nothing to prevent deaths and even obstructing the efforts of those who are trying to make a difference.
If we value human life we cannot view the loss of human life as an acceptable byproduct of unlimited access to guns.
