In honor of not one, but three World War II veterans nearing 100 years old, the Disabled American Veterans Outreach Center in Cortez will have a celebration on Friday, Dec. 6 at noon
It’s open to the public, and starts with lunch at their office, at 432 N. Broadway.
“I don’t think we’ve celebrated a 100-year-old veteran, and to celebrate three of them is pretty amazing,” said Russ Soule, an officer at the DAV in Cortez who is helping to plan the event.
Dick Reed, one of the veterans they’re celebrating, is turning 100 this week. Dick Lindsay, Montezuma County Commissioner Kent Lindsay’s father, and Charles Grasse will also be honored at the event.
“It’s our normal meeting day, but I suspect we won’t have a business meeting,” Soule said.
There will be an award ceremony to recognize the centenarians, and each of them should get a quilt of valor. Plus, there will be birthday cake, and “some terrible, off-key singing too,” Soule said.
All three veterans are longtime residents of Cortez, so everyone is invited to come and show their support on Friday.
