DENVER – With all the different state championships and exciting competitions that have graced the Denver Coliseum over the years, chances are that few of those moments are as energetic as the state spirit championship weekend.
Three Montezuma County schools made their presence known in their respective categories this past weekend, as the Mancos, M-CHS, and Dolores cheer teams each enjoyed their moment under the spotlight on the Coliseum floor.
The Bluejays, hot off their regional victories, took fifth in the 2A/3A Co-Ed division, as Mancos accumulated a score of 58.8, just outside the cut line to make finals. As one of the smallest schools in their classification, Mancos more than held their own again under third-year head coach Megan Daves-Warner.
M-CHS took to the mat in the 2A/3A Game Day field under head coach Emily Baumgartner, and the Panthers fared well in one of the deepest events of the weekend. The Panthers took 21st on the day, posting a score of 77.05, just six points away from earning a repeat trip to the finals.
Dolores entered in the 2A Cheer category, and the Bears finished with a net score of 56.9, which earned them ninth in the category. Head coach Melissa Herrera helped the Bears to improve from their tenth-place effort in the same category from a year earlier.
CHSAA offers six different categories of competition for the state spirit championships, with Cheer, Game Day, Co-Ed, Pom, Jazz, and Hip-Hop offering state titles this past Thursday through Saturday, Dec. 12 -14.
