There are seven vacancies on multiple city boards in Cortez

Cortez is looking to fill seven vacancies on five different city boards.

“Boards come and go; it’s not necessarily unusual to have multiple vacancies,” said Cortez City Clerk Linda Smith.

All the vacancies are volunteer – and thus unpaid – except for the Planning and Zoning Commission, which pays its members $25 a meeting, Smith said. That board has one opening.

The Parks, Recreation & Forestry Board is also looking to fill openings. There are three vacancies in that board, two of which are student representative vacancies.

“Parks and Rec likes input from kids who use the Rec Center,” Smith said.

Traditionally they recruit high schoolers to fill those spots, but it’s open to any student that’s interested.

The Parks, Recreation, and Forestry Advisory Board meets the first Thursday of each month at 3 p.m. in City Hall, and may have additional “special meetings.”

The Cortez Historic Preservation Board has a vacancy, which will ideally be filled by someone with “an interest and knowledge of local history and culture,” according to a news release. That board also meets at City Hall, on the first Wednesday of every month at 5 p.m.

The Library Advisory Board is looking for someone to advise the “Librarian and City Council on the operation and policies of the Library,” among other things. This board meets at the Cortez Public Library.

Community members from all over Montezuma County are welcome to apply to the aforementioned vacancies.

The Board of Adjustments and Appeals, which is the final board looking to fill an open position, and it must be filled by Cortez residents. Same goes for the Planning and Zoning Commission.
