The Sunflower Troupe’s committee carefully reviewed 24 submitted playwrights for the upcoming Sunflower Shorts Play Festival, paving the way for six of them to be performed at the second regional play festival.
KSJD’s Community Radio’s Sunflower Theatre will host the second Sunflower Shorts Play Festival on Friday, Sept 8 through Sunday, Sept. 10.
Not only will the troupe showcase six original playwrights but it also advances the Sunflower Troupe to evolve together. They’re a volunteer-run, community theater group based in Cortez and provide a creative outlet for community members while delivering quality entertainment.
The productions will serve the audience to a variety of situations – reimagining nursery rhymes and fairy tales, dealing with a difficult dinner guest, awakening to the shift of seasons, plus more.
“Whether you enjoy drama or comedy, seek a happy ending or a surprise, want to laugh or cry, there is a play for you in this mix,” the troupe’s executive producer, Kim Welty, said in a news release.
The winning authors all hail from the Four Corners area – Alisa Krakel and Wendy Watkins from Dolores, Edward Debutz and Vicki Meagher from Albuquerque; Michael Chapman and Joyce Fontana from Durango.
New faces will be seen with the troupe’s established nine actors in the festival’s productions, including Angie Beal, Sam Eggenhuizen, Amorina Lee-Martinez and Lauren Ragland.
The plays’ directors are Heidi Brugger, Silvia Fleitz, Steve Free, Hattie Miller and Mo Murray.
Audience members should expect to participate to vote for the play they liked the most. These results will be in the People’s Choice Award and announced on KSJD Radio.
The festival will run on both Friday, Sept. 8, and Saturday, Sept. 9, at 7 p.m., as well as Sunday, Sept. 10 at 2 p.m.
Tickets are $20 and can be purchased at the door or online.
