I was at the Mancos Public Library recently and was delighted to discover a beautiful and comprehensive display celebrating Black History Month, again this February.
The celebration of Black History Month originates with the Association for the Study of African American Life and History, founded by Mary McLeod Bethune, and spearheaded by Carter G. Woodson. His goal was to highlight the many and often overlooked achievements of African Americans throughout history.
“Negro History Week” was established in 1926. President Gerald Ford officially recognized it in 1976 during the nation’s bicentennial celebration and expanded “Negro History Week” to Black History Month, encouraging Americans to acknowledge the accomplishments of Black Americans across various fields.
Gloria Thatch Woody and her husband, Roger, grace us with rich presentations, displays and discussions and stories about African American history throughout the community. They are both well-versed and incredibly interesting. Their efforts are uplifting and filled with not only general history, but photos, books, details of certain outstanding African Americans, all surrounding a gorgeous photo of Gloria and Roger.
Thank you sincerely, Gloria and Roger, for your ongoing efforts to educate and dispel prejudice. We are so blessed to have you in our community. You have given so much over the years and are deeply appreciated.
I am also proud of the Mancos Public Library for hosting this display each year and being a warm, welcoming, place focused learning, respect and kindness for all. It truly is the best little library ever!
