According to Cortez Police Department incident report #12301934, Officer Joseph Yen responded to 21 E. 13th St. after dispatch reported a stolen vehicle.
At the scene, Yen spoke with Hunter Griswold, who told him that her boyfriend, Kimbrough, had stolen her mom’s vehicle, handgun and $400 in cash out of her purse.
She told Yen that Kimbrough might be traveling to Durango, where his family lives.
She provided a serial number for the handgun, a Taurus brand black G3C model 9mm, with the serial number 1KA25879. The gun had nine rounds.
Griswold’s mother and owner of the stolen vehicle, Cheri Anderson, said she heard the car start about 5:50 a.m. and when she looked outside, the car was gone. The keys had been on the top of the refrigerator.
The vehicle is a 2019 gray Jeep Wrangler Unlimited with the Colorado license plate ATFR72.
About 8:45 a.m., a deputy from the La Plata County Sheriff’s Office said the Jeep had been found in Durango with the keys still inside.
On Oct. 11, after following up with Griswold, Yen was told that Griswold had been able to obtain the stolen gun from her friend Jordan Messier, though she did not know how Messier came to be in possession of the handgun.
