Supernova Furniture, Sleep Gallery & Home has moved from downtown Durango to the building formerly occupied by Matlock Furniture and Mattress in Bodo Industrial Park to accommodate growth.
Supernova opened in the Crossroads Center in 2016 and has expanded since then, opening a mattress gallery in the same plaza and launching interior design services, said co-owner Robyn Vagneur.
The move into the 15,000-square-foot Bodo Park location allowed the store to consolidate its operations into one building and to start carrying additional furniture brands, such as Beauty Rest Black, Bassett and Flexsteel, said Joe Vagneur, Robyn’s husband and a co-owner.
“It’s going to give us that ability to create that seamless buying experience,” he said.
Since the store first opened, the inventory has also changed to better meet Southwest Colorado’s taste, Robyn Vagneur said.
Originally, Vagneur brought in items with more “bling,” similar to those sold at the Supernova locations owned by her parents in Texas, but she has since walked back the focus on more “flashy” items, she said.
For those looking to customize their furniture, the new location has self-serve kiosks to allow shoppers to digitally design couches, Vagneur said. For example, a shopper can pick out a fabric from among the store’s samples and then see how it would look on the model of their choice, she said. Shoppers can also pick out other custom aspects such as the feet and arms of a couch, she said.
As part of the expansion, the store will have a children’s play area featuring a life-size Velociraptor, she said. As a mom of two, it was important to ensure the store is kid-friendly and parents have an opportunity to shop without worrying about their children getting into trouble, she said.
The play area will also have a white couch that will allow Vagneur to showcase a performance fabric called Kashmira that is resistant to damage and can be cleaned with a wet cloth, she said. She expects the couch to hold up as part of the play area that her own kids will use regularly.
“The ultimate test is my kids,” she said.
