Sunflower Theatre brings reggae bands to Cortez

Telluride reggae band Niceness hopes to bring a foundation of positivity to the Sunflower Theatre on Friday.

“We’re excited to come out and connect with the community in Cortez,” lead vocalist Koral Delatierra said. “We’re hoping people come out and co-create a positive evening celebrating music in our region.”

The band plays venues around the western slope of Colorado, but Friday will be Niceness’s first visit to Cortez. Doors open at 6:15 p.m. for the show, which starts at 7 p.m. Tickets are $12 online or $15 at the door.

Special guest Wake Up Laughing, a Cortez band that blends reggae, gypsy and jazz music styles, joins Niceness for the show.

Though many of the musicians have been playing together off and on for more than a decade, Niceness started about a year-and-a-half ago, Delatierra said. Sets feature a variety of music styles, from reggae and dancehall to Latin, funk, soul and jazz, she said.

The band plays reggae versions of popular songs and soul favorites, including a handful of Motown tunes, Delatierra said. Niceness’s original songs are steeped in projecting positivity, accepting responsibility and stepping into one’s purpose in life, she said.

“Hopefully the message will come through clear and leave people feeling inspired,” Delatierra said.
