Students prepare for one-of-a-kind performance

Jake McKie, left, and Vincent Grego strike a pose Monday while rehearsing for the play "Super 'Sylum." London Feher is in the back.

What happens when you throw a bunch of superheroes inside of an insane asylum?

The answer: side-splitting fun.

Prepare to laugh out loud Monday and Tuesday, May 4 and May 5, at 7 p.m. inside the Performance Center at the Mancos High School during "Super 'Sylum," which was written by students. Tickets cost $5 for adults and $3 for students, children and seniors.

The premise is that four young people have been placed in an insane asylum for believing that they are superheroes. When a fifth girl joins the group, things get shaken up at the asylum, and their true identities are revealed.

"They think they are insane, but they really have superpowers," said Brittney Peacock, a 10th-grader.

Olivia Winter-Holm, a senior at Mancos High School, helped write the play.

"It's going to be funny," Winter-Holm said. "It's a really good story line."

Peacock plays the evil doctor, and Winter-Holm plays the evil assistant,

Winter-Holm said she enjoys writing, which is why she stays in drama.

Peacock is excited about the upcoming performance.

"Our play last year went really well and I wanted to do it again," she said.

Students were busy practicing the play on Monday.

Vincent Grego, a speedy superhero, bragged to the other superheroes, "I can catch a butterfly in .36 seconds."

Seventeen students are involved in the production.
