Under the direction of the School Director Matt Keefauver, Southwest Open School has made improvements to its campus and school policies to support campuswide productivity and to help to improve the health and well-being of students and the campus.

Campus improvements include building a new office, improvements to landscaping and remodeling select classroom buildings. Improvements to the student-designed garden were made possible through grants from the Colorado Garden Foundation and Ballantine Foundation.

In order to continue supporting the learning environment at SWOS, the addition of campus policies such as limited cellphone use and shorter passing periods have been adopted. The school also plans to address the nationwide increase in smoking and vaping by shortening passing periods and providing counseling and smoking-cessation resources to help students quit and educate them before they start.

SWOS is an alternative high school that provides personalized pathways to a fully accredited high school diploma. Applications for enrollment, with limited spaces, are available before Aug. 9. For more information, visit www.southwestopenschool.org.
