Southwest Civic Winds plays July 4 concert in Cortez

The Southwest Civic Winds band performs at 7 p.m. Monday, July 4, before the start of the Cortez fireworks show at dusk.

In a prelude to the Cortez fireworks show, Southwest Civic Winds will give a free concert starting at 7 p.m. Monday at the picnic pavilion in Centennial Park.

The 57-member band is composed of brass, woodwind and percussion players. The volunteer group was formed in 2012 in Durango, and is made up of professional musicians and music educators in the Four Corners region. Conductor Mark Walters is currently director of bands at Fort Lewis College.

“In the cool of the evening, you will find us in Cortez providing patriotic favorites as the sky darkens and the anticipation of fireworks grows,” states the band’s Facebook page.
