South Beech Street in Cortez to close for construction

LINDSAY EPPICH/Herald

Construction on Florida Road, shown here on Friday, may lead to the loss of parking spaces at Sunnyside Apartments on North College and Florida Road.

Construction will begin on South Beech Street between Main and First Streets on Sept. 18, according to a Thursday news release from the city of Cortez.

D&L Construction will repair sewer lines and storm drains in the area and lay down new asphalt on Beech Street, a project the release estimated would take about a month. The sewer repairs are part of a contract awarded to D&L by the Cortez Sanitation District, while the paving and storm drain repairs come from a city contract.

“To minimize the impact on residents, D&L will be combining the projects,” the release said.

During construction, First Street will be closed to through traffic at the Beech Street intersection for about three days starting Sept. 18. South Beech Street will be closed between Main and First streets for about four weeks starting Sept. 21.

The project will tie in a sewer line at the intersection of Beech and First streets, replace a sewer line on the west side of Beech Street, and repair a storm drain and lay asphalt on Beech Street. According to the release, the sewer tie-in will be the first item on D&L’s agenda, followed by the closure of South Beech Street for the other repairs. Foot traffic will not be affected during construction, the release said.
