The first recorded snow of the season fell last night in Southwest Colorado, blanketing mountain peaks above 12,000 feet.
“I’d say it’s less than an inch. It is a sign that fall is here,” said Julie Malingowski, a meteorologist with the National Weather Service in Grand Junction.
The storm generated rain at lower elevations. In Cortez, .16 inch fell, and in Yellow Jacket .78 inch fell.
In the next few days, temperatures in Cortez are expected to be in the upper 70s with no precipitation. Next weekend, the forecast shows a cold air mass moving into the area that is expected to bring rain in the valleys and snow in the high peaks.
