Who says Mondays have to be blah? Join San Francisco’s Slim Jenkins on Monday, Aug. 3 at 7:30 p.m. at the Sunflower Theatre.
Slim Jenkins celebrates American roots music and its tradition of innovation and energy. Harking to the heyday of hot jazz and blues, he evokes a world of seduction and mystery, love and betrayal. Sultry and smooth, or jumping and hot, their music keeps the dance floor energized and alive.
Slim Jenkins never loses sight of the balance between tradition and innovation that defines classic American music. Its repertoire is an evocation of our musical history, while at the same time an expression of the edge and attitude of music today.
Singer Justin Oliver learned how to swing dance, and from there he fell in love with the old-time music. For two years, he listened to acts like the Royal Deuces, Pee Wee Crayton and Screamin’ JayHawkins. After that, he decided to put a band together: Slim Jenkins was born in January 2010.
Where did the band name come from? Slim Jenkins was the hottest nightclub in Oakland from the ’30s to the ’60s on Seventh Street. All the top jazz and blues artists played there. One of Justin’s nicknames is Slim, and his middle name is Jenkins, so it worked out to have musical, local and personal relevance.
The dance floor will be open with limited seating in balcony area and main floor.
