Skate 4 Life competition packs park

Aryan Schulte, Eric McCulley and George Gonzales take home first-place finishes

Parque de Vida was packed on Saturday for the fifth annual 4 Corners 4 Life Skate 4 Life competition.

Started by Melissa Moreno in order to prevent suicide through public awareness and education, the event has grown to include a BMX competition, skateboard competition, music festival and local vendors.

“It just gets bigger and bigger, so we just have to grow with it,” said Moreno. “We want to make an impact and try to save lives and teach these youth how to recognize signs. That’s all we want to do. If we can save one life, it’s a good job.”

There were five riders in the BMX competition, with Aryan Schulte and Cristian Navarrete squaring off in the finals.

Schulte squeaked out the win to claim first place, Navarrete finished second, Cory Bilderback placed third, Rylan Tracker was fourth and Eli Fitzgerald finished fifth.

There were 22 competitors and two separate divisions in the skateboard competition.

The first-place finisher in the under-15 category was Eric McCulley, with Kyler Ryan taking second and Nicholas Lee finishing third.

And then in the advanced division, George Gonzales and Neco Escoe matched up in the finals, with the seventh-seeded Gonzales coming through with the upset to win the championship. Escoe finished in second place and Ammon McFarland took third.
