It’s beginning to feel more like fall outside, which means winter is right around the corner.
In light of the changing seasons, Montezuma County’s Office of Emergency Management is urging people to sign up for its emergency alert system.
It’s an opt-in system, and you can customize what kind of alerts you’d like to receive for road closures, severe weather warnings, evacuations, missing persons and other emergencies in your area.
“Last winter we closed numerous roads well over 30 occasions due to weather related accidents,” the county’s Emergency Manager Jim Spratlen said in an email.
Spratlen said the system is “reliable” and “accurate”. It’s able to send people alerts based on their location, meaning if someone is in proximity to an “imminent threat”, the system will send out alerts to those in the area, not the whole county.
When you sign up, you can also choose to receive text messages, phone calls, emails or all three. The information you enter into the system will not be used for any other purposes except for emergency alerts, Spratlen said.
