The San Juan County Sheriff’s Office has arrested Mateo Yazzie, 23, and charged him with second-degree murder in the death of Denise Werito.

On April 5 at 7:27 p.m., deputies were dispatched to a residence on County Road 390 in reference to a missing person.

Family members of Werito were concerned because she had not arrived at her workplace that day, her vehicle was not at her residence, and they had not heard from her. While meeting family at Werito’s residence, deputies forcibly entered the residence, where they found her body. The scene was secured, and detectives were called in.

Yazzie, who lived at the residence, was identified as a possible suspect, and an abandoned vehicle in Farmington was linked to Werito.

Yazzie was detained at an apartment in Farmington, questioned and arrested on a warrant for second-degree murder.
