Seven students to head to state science fair

Dolores sixth-graders swept the physics category last week during the Regional Science Fair in Durango. Justin Brunner, at center won first place, was a runner-up for the Da Vinci Special Award and will attend the state science fair in April. Dolores Middle School attended the Regional Science Fair in Durango on Thursday, March 5.

"Both the sixth and seventh grades had a strong showing, and we will be sending seven students on to the (Colorado) State Science Fair contest in April," said science teacher Kristen Schurr.

Awards are as follows:

Seventh grade

McKenzy Howerton and Jordan Elder: first place in team division, qualified for state.

Paige Featherman and Madison Lankford: second place in team division, qualified for state.

Allison Alvarez: second place in plant science; qualified for state.

Dara Suckla: honorable mention in plant science.

Wade Charles: special award in energy and transportation.

Sixth grade

Justin Brunner: first place in physics; a runner-up for the Da Vinci Special Award; qualified for state.

Keegan Spurlock: second place in physics.

Kevin Purkat: third place in physics.

Hayden Tallmadge: first place in math science; NES Special Award.

Chance Wilbur: first place in environmental science; NES Special Award.

Camden Malloy: second place in plant science; qualified for state.
