On July 1, the second round of the 81321 Launch Grant applications are due.

These grants, which are sponsored by the city of Cortez Public Arts Advisory Board and the LOR Foundation are open to community members, individuals, nonprofit and for-profit businesses that have a project that will benefit the community as a whole, according to a news release from Kelly Codner, city public information officer .

Funding ranges up to the maximum amount of $4,000 for creative projects.

According to the news release, applicants are asked to consider the following questions about their project:

  • Does the project make Cortez an amazing place to call home?
  • Does the money produce something tangible that can be seen, felt or experienced?
  • Does the project engage the broader community?
  • Does the project bring something new, innovative and unique to Cortez?

The funds are to be used to purchase supplies and materials for the project or to contract with a local artist to complete the project.

There is no age limit.

The LOR Foundation is handling the final grant decisions and funding allocations, while the CPAAC is advertising and acting as an advisory grant review committee.

The first round of funding closed April 1. The third round will close Oct. 1.

In the first round of funding, two projects were awarded. The Four Corners Writer’s group was awarded $6,250 to “formally establish a nonprofit organization and publish a curated anthology featuring works of fiction, nonfiction and poetry by Cortez-area writers,” and the second project is expected to be funded $750 to create “whimsical fairy homes” that will be placed and “hidden” throughout public areas in Cortez.
