After a stellar senior season, Dolores High School basketball player Brianna Schwartz is taking her talents to the next level.
Meeting with friends, family, coaches and school staff on May 19, Schwartz signed a letter of intent to play for Colorado Northwestern Community College next season.
Located in Rangely, the school and team appealed to Schwartz for a variety of reasons.
"(Rangely's) small-town feeling attracted me," said Schwartz, the daughter of Larry and Michelle Schwartz. "I'm excited to be back on the court again. I'm looking forward to playing with a new team."
Coached by Brian Ortmeier, Colorado Northwestern hopes to utilize an up-tempo attack, which, according to Ortmeier, will suit Schwartz's talents well.
In addition to Schwartz's athleticism and commitment to defense, the senior's academic successes rendered her a must-sign prospect for Colorado Northwestern.
"I thought very highly of Brianna's game and what she can do not only as an athlete, but also in the classroom," said Ortmeier. "She really fits with our program and that's why we recruited her."
As a senior, Schwartz led the Bears in scoring with 19.3 points per game. Schwartz also enjoyed a stellar volleyball season, qualified for the state track meet and was selected to play in the Colorado Coaches of Girls' Sports All-State Basketball game.
"In a lot of ways, (Brianna's) work ethic led our team," said Bears head coach Tim Kercher. "She worked really hard last summer and had a great year. She really upped her game, and we'll miss her, but (her signing) is awesome."
