San Juan College launches new mascot

Goal of mascot is to create sense of unity

The new San Juan College sun mascot will be unveiled during a launch party at 2 p.m. Friday, April 28, at the Learning Commons Plaza.

The mascot is intended to create a branded identity for the college and instill a sense of unity.

At the end of March, students, employees and community members were asked to submit names for the sun mascot. The top five names were selected from nearly 450 submissions and then put out for a vote.

The top names were Sol, Blaze, Fuego, Apollo and Ray. The name with the most votes will be revealed when the mascot is introduced.

The community is invited to celebrate the new mascot at the launch party live music, yard games, snacks, and the opportunity for guests to meet the mascot.

Student volunteers from the Herencia Latina Center will showcase the new mascot-related items available at the College Bookstore, while KSJE 90.9 FM will conduct a live broadcast at the party. Student organizations will be giving out food and prizes.

Leading up to the mascot launch party, the campus will celebrate Spirit Week.

Monday will be Feel the Heat Day, when students and employees are encouraged to wear sunglasses, sun hats and sandals.

Tuesday, the campus will have a Door Decorating Day, where students and employees will decorate campus doors showing SJC pride in coordination with April being Community College month.

Wednesday, students and employees are invited to wear denim to show support for Sexual Assault Awareness month at San Juan College.

Thursday is Sunshine Day, which is a day for students and employees to wear brilliant colors and share positive thoughts with others.

Friday, students, employees and guests are asked to wear SJC gear to show school spirit. Mary’s Kitchen will serve special menu selections throughout Spirit Week.
