River Talk Tree will be OK

The crab apple trees are in full bloom out in front of the Galloping Goose and Town Hall along Railroad Avenue.

But those beautiful trees saw a bit of action last week when an RV caught fire and crashed into a stop sign and telephone pole in front of Town Hall. The pole caught fire, and one of the crab apple trees looks a bit worse for wear this week, but it appears it will be OK.

The accident drew quite the audience.

The report stated the woman driving the vehicle was trying to stop the 1977 RV, but once the fire started the brakes stopped working. Shifting the vehicle into park wasn't working either, and the woman continued to try to stop the RV as the inside filled with smoke and her foot started to burn. The ordeal ended dramatically in downtown Dolores, but it could have been a lot worse.

River on the Rise

The Dolores River was on the rise this week as temperatures warmed and the area saw a bit of rain. On Tuesday, the river was running at 732 cfs.

That is boatable to all of you rafters out there.

However, it is still a bit cold for my likes.

New addition

The Pony Expresso in Dolores has a new addition to the family - a statue.

What is the statue of?

A horse, of course.

Be sure to check out the new addition as you get a espresso.

Visitor season is here

The Dolores Visitors Center entered summer hours recently and is now open every day of the week, a sure sign that summer is on the way.

House Creek open

The road to the House Creek campground opened last weekend. Be sure to check out this beautiful area.

House Creek Campground is on the shores of McPhee Reservoir. This is a good time to visit House Creek as there is no shade and it is hot during summer.

McPhee Reservoir, the largest within the San Juan National Forest and second-largest in Colorado, has 50 miles of shoreline. Boating, water skiing, swimming and fishing are popular activities. A boat ramp is located within the campground, as are about 37 campsites.

Trail work delayed

The McPhee Overlook Trail Project has been delayed a bit as different agencies work on wildlife mitigation issues. A scheduled workday last weekend was delayed. Once completed, the McPhee Overlook Trail will connect the Town of Dolores with the House Creek Campground and the Bean Canyon Tail. The Bean Canyon Trail is part of the Boggy Draw trail system.
