Rep. Jeff Hurd (Journal, Mar. 12) touted his recent visit to the Cortez Disabled American Veterans Office, implying his support for veterans, veteran care and benefits.
In the same article, Hurd went on to brag about his role in extending the Trump Tax Cuts. Here’s what he failed to point out: 1) The tax cuts are for those making over $400,000 (not me, how about you?) 2) Their plan to fund those tax cuts to the wealthy includes an all-out assault on our Department of Veterans Affairs.
Hurd is not standing up for the thousands of veterans who have already been illegally fired from government service, and he is doing nothing to stop the Trump/Musk/Doge proposed firing of another 83,000 VA employees.
There’s something Rep. Hurd apparently doesn’t know about Veterans. We stand together. We don’t leave any man behind. We took an oath to our country and our constitution, not to any one man or any one political party.
Those of us who have fought for this country take offense at someone who has never served, wrapping himself in veterans' approval, while failing to fight for those who have served.
To my fellow Montezuma County Veterans, we have been misused and misrepresented. It is clear that Hurd’s visit to the Disabled American Veteran’s office and our community was nothing more than a self-serving photo opp.
Since Rep. Hurd has invoked our name and implicated us in his deceptive claims, we should invite him back. And this time, let’s have a meaningful conversation.
