Ren Bedoni was given a preliminary and bond hearing date in the 22nd Judicial District during his return filing of charges on Tuesday.

At his first appearance since his arrest, Bedoni’s representation requested a preliminary hearing and asked that bond be addressed at that hearing. Judge Douglas Walker, who was filling in for Chief Judge Todd Plewe, set the next hearing for Tuesday, Sept. 24 at 10 a.m.

Bedoni was arrested on Sept. 2 after allegedly beating another man with a golf club near City Market. The victim, Hiram Maryboy, told police that Bedoni had taken his backpack. When he tried to leave with it, Maryboy attempted to get his backpack back, and Bedoni used the golf club he was reportedly using as a cane to repeatedly hit Maryboy.

At Southwest Memorial Hospital, Bedoni’s breath alcohol content was 0.293. Maryboy’s physician’s report showed that he had a contusion to his upper back, right upper arm and a 1 centimeter laceration over his right elbow, injuries thought to be from the golf club. Maryboy told police he was afraid to press charges because he was concerned Bedoni “would kill him if he did so,” according to the police report.

Bedoni was left in the custody of jail staff with a felony slip for second-degree assault.
