Red Mountain Pass fully reopens after Monday morning crash

Truck hauling concrete tipped over on U.S. Highway 550
A semitrailer truck carrying concrete rolled over on U.S. Highway 550, south of Ouray, on Monday morning, blocking both lanes of the highway, which was fully reopened around 11:30 a.m.

Red Mountain Pass was closed or partially blocked for about three hours Monday for a rollover truck crash north of the summit.

The closure occurred about 8:25 a.m. near mile marker 89 on U.S. Highway 550, just north of an area known as Ironton near a section of highway that features several hairpin switchbacks.

An initial report showed a semitrailer truck carrying concrete tipped over, blocking portions of the road.

Around 9:30 a.m., one lane was reopened to alternating traffic, resulting in about 30-minute delays, as hazmat crews cleared the area.

CDOT spokeswoman Lisa Schwantes said the highway was fully reopened as of 11:30 a.m. She did not have further details about the crash.

Colorado State Patrol Trooper Josh Lewis said the driver, a 37-year-old man, sustained minor injuries. Lewis did not have details on why the crash occurred, but said alcohol and drugs are not suspected.
