Purgatory Resort will hold its annual pond skimming event on Sunday, giving skiers, snowboarders and spectators a chance to celebrate the ski season.
The event is set to take place on from 12:30-3 p.m. near the base area.
Costumes are encouraged.
Crashes are guaranteed.
Space is also limited and prizes are up for grabs. The first 100 people to sign up are in. Registration will begin at 9:30 a.m. Sunday at the ticket office’s will call desk and costs $20. Participants must be 12 years or older, and will need to sign a waiver.
Purgatory is encouraging everyone on the mountain, not just the competitors, to dress in their craziest costumes on pond skimming day.
The event was moved up a few days due to warm weather, and for the same reason Sunday will also be the last chance to ski the backside of the mountain. Sunday will be the final day Lift 3 will be spin this season.
As of Wednesday, the ski area had 67 runs of 107 trails open and the mountain was reporting a 42-inch base after receiving 152 inches of snow this season. Lifts 5, 8, 4, and B4 Magic Carpet as well as Dante's all closed on March 23.
The skiing, however, will continue for a few more weekends.
In April, Purgatory will operate Lifts 1 and 2 Fridays through Sundays, until closing on April 20.

Wolf Creek is also winding down its season with some festivities.
The fun gets underway Saturday with JJ & The Hooligans playing live for the 85th Anniversary Ski Boot Dance. Music will be from noon to 3 p.m. on the Upper Lodge Sundeck. The best moves will be awarded prizes, and dancers don’t even need to take off their snowboard boots.
Saturday will also feature a free fun race open to all ages and ability levels. .
On Sunday, there’s an 85th anniversary trivia hour for people to test their Wolf Creek knowledge. Trivia begins at 3 p.m. near the Pathfinder Bar.
On Monday, local appreciation rates go into effect for the remaining days of the season: $68 for adults, $49 for seniors and $34 for children. Everyone is considered a local.
Closing weekend will feature a retro-ski inspired costume contest and the grand prize drawing for its 85th anniversary event participation. Wolf Creek is scheduled to close for the season on April 6.
Year-to-date, as of Wednesday, Wolf Creek had received 201 inches of snowfall and was reporting a 62-inch base.
