The San Juan National Forest Dolores Ranger District will hold a public meeting on the spruce beetle infestation, other insect and disease threats to high-elevation forests, and management options to respond to these issues on Wednesday, July 1, 2015, from 6-7:30 p.m. at the Dolores Public Lands Office, 29211 Highway 184, in Dolores.
Members of the public are encouraged to ask questions and share their concerns at the meeting. Tom Eager, a U.S. Forest Service insect and disease expert, will explain the biology of the spruce beetle, how it spreads, and current conditions. The Forest Service will have maps on hand showing areas of recent beetle activity and areas where treatments could be undertaken in response to current insects and disease, as well as areas where treatment could potentially lessen the threat of future outbreaks.
