Protest against Utah uranium mill is on Saturday

Annual march to uranium mill is on Saturday
Ute Mountain Ute tribal members and environmentalists gather in front of a reservation community center in White Mesa before a protest march to a nearby uranium mill last year.

On Saturday, May 19, the White Mesa chapter of the Ute Mountain Ute tribe will hold a rally and march to express concerns about a nearby uranium mill in southeast Utah.

A rally begins at 11 a.m. at the White Mesa Community Center just south of Blanding, on the west side of U.S. Highway 191. Turn in at the Mobil gas station and continue one block south to the community center.

After the rally, there will be a spiritual and protest walk along the highway to the Energy Fuels White Mesa uranium mill, a few miles to the north. Support vans and law enforcement will accompany protesters. Transportation will be available back to the community center after the walk.

Citizens of the Ute Mountain reservation community are concerned about contamination from the mill and impacts to sacred and cultural sites. The mill is on private land near the reservation.

The event is sponsored by the White Mesa Concerned Community, a grassroots group working to inform citizens and protect health, water, land and sacred sites.
