‘Ag is hard’: Local producers convene in Cortez to discuss concerns and solutions

It’s a space for producers to convene and dream up their ideal vision for farming locally and to address problems with an intention of solving them.

Farmers and ranchers are most qualified to identify gaps or needs within their operations, said Mary Jo Standard, community involvement coordinator at the Montezuma Leadership Network.

Once needs are identified, they can identify actions to address gaps and find resources to support their actions, she said.

“Many times, when a community has identified needs or gaps, the best ones to identify a solution and implement action are the community members themselves, rather than nonprofit or government entities,” Standard said.

It’s the second time local producers will connect in Cortez’s Chamber of Commerce building and delve into that conversation. The upcoming gathering will be Thursday, April 17 from noon to 1:30 p.m.

Lunch is provided – Standard asks that people RSVP, though it’s not required – and that they bring a friend. All participants will receive a $25 gift card for sharing their time and expertise.

Standard said they’ll recap the first meeting “and have time for additional vision statements, needs, and actions to be added.”

“We will talk through what is already happening in the community and how this group can either plug into existing work or how to take action on new topics,” Standard said.
