Police: Kids left in car as adults fought

The Cortez Police Department responded to a couple of calls on Saturday, Aug. 29, that involved children left in cars while adults fought indoors.

Officers responded to the 600 block of North Ash Street after a caller at 9:13 a.m. reported a woman attempting to climb through her ex-fiancée's bedroom window. The courts had previously issued a protection order barring the woman from having any harassing contact with the alleged victim, police said.

Upon arrival, officers reported finding an unattended 3-year-old in a running vehicle.

According to the alleged victim, he and the woman had planned to be married that day, but the wedding was canceled. He told police that his would-be bride caught him in bed with another woman the morning of the attack. That woman fled the scene before officers arrived.

Police reported that would-be bride then grabbed a .45-caliber handgun from inside the man's residence. A struggle ensued, and the man was struck in the head with the gun before the woman threw it across the room.

She then apparently grabbed the man's laptop and threw it into a 55-inch television and grabbed a pair of scissors and started cutting blankets. After the man wrestled the scissors away from her, the police report said, the woman she reportedly retrieved a 6-inch kitchen knife and continued cutting the bed.

During the incident, the woman also reportedly threw a 12-pack of beer, breaking bottles and spewing beer throughout the kitchen. After the woman went outside, she apparently attempted to climb inside via a bedroom window, and police were called.

The woman told police she was only trying to retrieve her shoes. She was arrested and charged with felony criminal mischief, harassment, violating a protection order and domestic violence. Her vehicle and child were released to her mother.

In an unrelated call, police responded to the 1300 block of Mesa Verde Street just after 1 a.m. to find a woman bleeding from the lip. The woman had apparently been partying at a residence for at least four hours when partygoers questioned why she left her 2-year-old child unattended inside her vehicle.

Police reported that a fight ensued between her and another female. The woman also reportedly bit a man's face. She was arrested and charged with child abuse.

Police reported that a social worker was called to the scene after finding the child strapped into a car seat that was soaked in urine. The child was released to a family member.

Also on Aug. 29, police responded to a domestic incident on the 400 block of South Ash Street moments before midnight. A man and woman were both arrested and charged with assault and domestic violence in connection to an altercation, which included hair-pulling and finger-biting.
