Authorities on Tuesday released the name of an Ignacio man whose death is under investigation by the Colorado Bureau of Investigation.
La Plata County Sheriff Sean Smith said authorities responded to a home a few miles north of Ignacio in the 400 block of County Road 509 around 11 a.m. Monday and arrived to find a deceased person.
The man has been identified as Mark Wayman, 65. His cause of death had not been determined as of Tuesday. An autopsy is scheduled for Wednesday.
In connection with the investigation, authorities are seeking assistance from the public in locating a 2005 silver or gray Dodge Neon, last seen Saturday in Bodo Park in Durango.
The vehicle is registered with Colorado license plate SRO-718 and has a dent on the passenger side of the rear bumper, according to a news release sent Tuesday. The vehicle was listed as stolen Monday.
“Please immediately report any sightings of the Dodge Neon to law enforcement and do not attempt to approach the vehicle,” the news release said. “Any additional information regarding the vehicle can be reported to Investigator Jim Hendricks, (970) 382-7018.”
Law enforcement made a large response Monday to Wayman’s home. When contacted Monday, Smith released few details about the investigation.
“This is very fresh, obviously, and I can’t say much,” he said.
The Sheriff’s Office requested the aid of the Colorado Bureau of Investigation. Smith said CBI investigators were expected to arrive Tuesday.
“It’s an interesting situation, and we’re still trying to determine the facts,” he said. “We’ll be on scene for an extended period of time with this investigation.”
At least a half dozen law enforcement vehicles were at the scene Monday afternoon. The driveway was cordoned off with yellow police tape. The rest of the county road was open.
A number of Sheriff’s Office deputies were seen walking in and out of the home and going through the contents of a truck.
