8:20 a.m., A woman reported that graffiti has showed up on the Front Row Seat building, 610 E. Main St., and on a semitrailer starting Dec. 25. The officer who took this report recognized more instances of this art style around Cortez. A general request for surveillance video resulted in the AFC Urgent Care, 1942 E. Main St., providing video of a person placing graffiti on the Econo Lodge, 2020 E. Main St., and a second person acting as a spotter. Other footage and pictures of graffiti from several other locations was collected, but no one involved has been identified at the time of the report.
11:15 a.m., A man approached another man in the parking lot of Walmart, 1835 E. Main St., and punched him in the nose. He then left to Veterans Park, 802 E. Main St. An officer contacted him there where he stated he punched the man in the face because the man was know for beating women. He was cited on suspicion of assault.
12:55 p.m., A man provided information for a stolen handgun from a previous incident on Tuesday, Aug. 23. He had given it to a friend for the time he would be out of town and it was stolen from their residence.
2:07 p.m., A truck that matched a REDDI report was reported parked in the roadway in the 1800 block of East Main Street. The man who was in the truck was asleep and receiving calls from the trucks owner. The man refused to do roadside maneuvers and was arrested. Two open alcohol containers were found in the truck.
5:49 p.m., A report was made for a car crash in a parking lot at 2222 E. Main St. One of the drivers admitted to drinking before driving in the parking lot, and she admitted to hitting the other car. She was arrested on suspicion of drunken driving and careless driving.
6:00 p.m., A man was report banging on the back door of a house in the 700 block of West Seventh Street. He was found in the backyard sitting when an officer offered a ride to the homeless shelter. The officer told the man he had to be in cuffs for the ride. Once the officer had the man restrained, the officer advised the man that he was actually under arrest on a warrant and transported him to the Montezuma County Detention Center.
8:51 a.m., A report was made for damaged property at 24 N. Madison St. An employee showed an officer a video of a man smashing two planter pots with an estimated value of $70. The man had been arrested for another incident earlier that morning on suspicion of damaging property. He was cited at the Montezuma County Detention Center on suspicion of damaging private property.
6:11 p.m., A man wearing a GPS ankle monitor was indicated to be at his home in the 600 block of East Third Street. As a warrant had been issued for his arrest an officer went to the residence and arrested him. The man claimed multiple time that his lawyer had arranged it so that he could turn himself in on Tuesday, Jan. 3.
6:56 p.m., A report was made for the theft of propane tank from Speedway, 2320 E. Main St. The cage holding the tanks seemed to have been opened with bolt cutters and at the time of the report it is unclear how many tanks were taken.
7:38 p.m., A man reported his wife missing because the temperature was dropping and she had not come home. When an officer spoke with the man, he stated she had just called him and she was at the Montezuma Park, 15 W. Montezuma Ave. An officer found her and arrested her on a warrant. The stray cat that was with her was taken to the Cortez Animal Shelter.
10:05 p.m., A man was pulled over for a headlight out in the 200 block of South Silgo Street. He was arrested on a warrant, and a syringe with an unidentified substance was found on his person.
9:47 p.m., A man was reported to have tried to shoplift a small jar of garlic and pack of hard-boiled eggs estimated to cost $6.98 from City Market, 508 E. Main St. The man told an officer he had tried to take the food because he was hungry. He was cited on suspicion of shoplifting and issued an indefinite trespass notice.
1:15 p.m., A man was reported to be asleep in the bathroom at Walmart, 1835 E. Main St. He was cited on suspicion of trespassing. The man previously had been trespassed from Walmart.
2:31 p.m., The Bureau of Indian Affairs advised that they had been pursuing a car that was headed toward Cortez but they had stopped. The car followed by an officer from the 700 block of South Broadway to the parking lot of McDonald’s, 1332 E. Main St. The driver had been swerving between lanes, and an open container of alcohol was found inside the car. The man driving was arrested on suspicion of drunken driving, driving without a valid license and for having an open container in a vehicle.
8:20 p.m., A woman who had been trespassed from Walmart, 1835 E. Main St., and a man were seen attempting to shoplift alcohol and clothing from Walmart in the amount of $233.41. They recognized a loss-prevention employee and grabbed items from the cart they had filled up and left through the fire exit.
3:06 p.m., A man at the intersection of South Ash Street and Third Street heading South on Ash hit the tail end of a truck going east on Third. He was issued a penalty assessment for failure to yield.
11:49 a.m., A woman at the Montezuma County Detention Center, 730 E. Driscoll St., was arrested on a warrant.
12:42 p.m., A woman at the Montezuma County Courts, 865 N. Park St., was arrested on a warrant.
1:49 p.m. A man at the intersection of North State Street and East Empire Street was attempting to turn left onto North State Street heading Northbound. He collided with a truck headed south bound on North State Street. The man was issued a penalty assessment for failure to yield.
2:16 p.m., A woman who had been trespassed from City Market, 508 E. Main St., was reported on the property outside. She was issued summons on suspicion of trespassing.
4:22 p.m., A report was made for a fight involving a knife at City Market, 508 E. Main St. A woman reportedly took a man’s sleeping bag from him, and when he asked for it back she attempted to stab him with a knife she had taken from him several weeks ago. The man was able to wrestle the knife from her without injury. The woman was arrested on suspicion of aggravated robbery and criminal attempt of assault. She was also cited on suspicion of theft and violating a protection order by wielding a knife while drunk.
